Basic Skills Workshops

BASE 51 are now offering Numeracy and Literacy workshops to service users in partnership with ENABLE.

Aims

The overall aim is to work with young people on an individual basis or within a group work setting to improve on numeracy, literacy, basic reading, writing, spelling and maths that is of a standard set out by the Department of Education and Skills [DfES].

Young people work towards a Level 2 in either Numeracy or Literacy or both. A Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE qualification.

Delivery

The courses are delivered on a weekly basis by qualified Basic Skills tutors in the BASE 51 Learning Lounge. We are also able to offer young people an on-line testing facility leading to accreditation.

Young people work from their own individual learning plan and are given the opportunity to work at their own pace.

Feedback from Young People

"Basic Skills has enabled me to understand maths better than I did before. I have gained my Level 2 in Literacy and now I hope to take my exam for Level 2 in Maths very soon".

"I think we should have more Basic Skills sessions because one day is not enough.... I really enjoy learning".

"I have learn't alot since starting Basic Skills and I want to keep going because the work is good and I can still have fun".

Future Developments

BASE 51 aims to incorporate Basic Skills into other vocational courses through embedded learning. Embedded teaching and learning combines the development of Literacy and Numeracy with vocational and other skills for example through Cookery Workshops or ICT Classes. The skills acquired provide learners with the confidence, competance and motivations necessary for them to succeed in qualifications in life and at work.
